When did actors have the hardest time in Hollywood?

The actors had the hardest time around late 20s until the end of WWII. Most of them were kids actors and lived no actual childhood. Thus they had to cope with many psychological problems and addictions from young age. For example Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney and other young performers were constantly given amphetamines, as well as barbiturates to take before bed. For Garland, this regular dose of drugs led to addiction and a lifelong struggle, and contributed to her eventual demise. She later resented the hectic schedule and felt that her youth had been stolen from her by MGM. During the WWII Hollywood had hard financial times along with the existing problems due to the non existing technology that helped later the productions.
